  1. Google adds seven new features for Android, US users can get Dark Web reports as well by Anushe Fawaz Google I/O 2023 happened a few weeks ago when the company announced several features for Android devices alongside Google Pixel products like Pixel 7a. Today, it is introducing seven new capabilities to increase productivity and user safety and help them learn new skills. Among the seven features is Reading Practice. It helps readers improve their vocabulary and comprehension skills. Users can run it on their Android Tablets or phones and gain access to thousands of books. The children’s ebooks are marked with a “Practice” badge and let users hear and practice pronunciation of unfamiliar words and receive feedback in real-time. Additionally, users are getting three new widgets to customize their devices and add their desired shortcuts. The new widgets allow users to get personalized TV show and movie recommendations, receive headlines about their topics of interest, and track selected stocks. These are done through Google TV, Google News, and Google Finance respectively. The announcement also mentions a new watch face by Spotify for Google’s Wear OS. It provides users access to personalized music and podcasts they want to listen to. They can also access their playlists, 'like' the current song, or skip to the next or previous song right from the watch shortcut. Google is also offering users who commute in Washington, D.C., and the San Francisco Bay Area SmarTrip and Clipper cards via Google Wallet that they can access from their Wear OS. This lets them simply tap and ride and skip the line. On Google Keep for Wear OS, users can add a tile for fast access to a selected note or to-do list on their watch. They can swipe through the tiles to find the pinned notes they want quick access to. Furthermore, with GBoard and Emoji Kitchen, users can remix their favorite emoji into stickers. The Emoji Kitchen lets users combine their selected emojis to create a new and customized emoji they can share with others as messages. Lastly, Google is increasing user protection, especially for those in the US, by adding Dark Web Reports on the Google One website and app. With this, users can scan their email addresses to check if their emails have been exposed to the Dark Web. Additionally, Google One members in the US can check other details like their social security numbers and receive guidance on how to increase safety. Google mentioned that this feature will expand to 20 new countries in the coming months.
  2. Switch emulator Yuzu is now officially available on Android by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Yuzu, the popular Nintendo Switch emulator, is breaching into a new platform. Following years of updates on Windows and Linux, Yuzu has now officially landed for Android. Not all the bells and whistles of the desktop builds will be available just yet on the new platform, but it is still a tremendous achievement. "In the past year, we have made significant strides in improving both the accuracy and performance of yuzu. And with many more such improvements in progress, we understood that the longer we waited, the more challenging it would become for us to support an Android build," revealed the Yuzu team on a blog post. "We hope to welcome Android developers interested in lending their expertise to a cutting-edge project and produce new yuzu features, optimizations, and other improvements!" There are some steep hardware requirements attached to this release, however. Only Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs with Adreno GPUs are supported for now. Having a large amount of RAM was also mentioned as crucial, with at least 8GB being recommended, and more is always better. For example, Tears of the Kingdom currently requires 12GB of RAM to run on an Android device. Tears of the Kingdom running on a Redmagic 8 Pro! pic.twitter.com/tPTwXS4jSP — yuzu (@yuzuemu) May 31, 2023 Features such as LAN/LDN multiplayer, input profiles, and TAS scripts are also missing from the Android version of Yuzu for now. The team has said its focus is currently on improving compatibility and performance while solving emulation challenges presented by Android hardware. The developers have found that Adreno 600 GPUs running Mesa Turnip drivers display the best compatibility for games, though not the best performance. Performance differences in this early state while using the Turnip drivers and default can be seen in this chart: Yuzu came into the spotlight back in January of 2018, less than a year after the launch of the Nintendo Switch portable console. The open-source project's developers are also responsible for the Nintendo 3DS emulator Citra. Yuzu is now available via the Google Play Store in both free and paid ($4.99) variants. The Android version's GitHub page containing standalone downloads is not online yet, but the developer is planning to release it to the public soon.
  3. WhatsApp beta brings draft filter, status archive and more to Windows, Android and iOS by Ishtiaqe Hanif Meta is working on bringing a flurry of new features to WhatsApp. Its iOS build v23.10.76 brings companion mode, which lets users log in to the same account from up to five devices. Previously, this mode only had a chatting and notification option from other larger screen devices, and the latest update brings calling and other mobile phones to the mix. Source: WABetaInfo This update enables users to make and receive calls from multiple phones using the same account, just like most other chatting apps. Users may expect to receive the update over the coming weeks. In another update on Android, build v2.23.11.18, WhatsApp added support to archive status for business users. This comes as it brings its UI redesign for the Android app, both the traditional flavor and business variant. Source: WABetaInfo It also introduces usernames through the beta program on the Google Play Store. WABetaInfo spotted this feature on build v2.23.11.15. WhatsApp is preparing a public rollout of searchable usernames as an alternative to contacting other users based on phone numbers. Source: WABetaInfo Windows users on WhatsApp beta channel v2.2320.1.0 onwards can expect to change app languages independently of the system language. The language change option can be found in the settings menu under General. Users can now also filter chats with drafts written in them. It can be helpful to keep track of and find the currents quickly. Source: WABetaInfo For iOS and Android users on the latest builds, the chat app adds password encryption to end-to-end encrypted backup as an additional layer to ensure backup security. Users will be prompted to enter a password to retrieve backed-up messages on the cloud. All these features are still under development, and to gain access, users may have to sign up for beta testing. Beta testers can expect to try out some of these features before the public rollout. For Android, ensure you are on the latest build above, v2.23.11.18; for iOS, v23.10.76 and Windows, v2.2320.1.0. To sign up for the beta, visit the Android and Windows links here. Source: WABetaInfo 1, 2, 3, 4
  4. Android 14 Beta 2.1 update for Pixel phones fixes multiple bugs from the previous update by Tushar Mehta Google's latest Android version — Android 14 — is set to launch during the fall season this year. As the tradition goes, Android 14 is currently available in beta for owners of select smartphones to try out the upcoming features before a wider release. Following the Android 14 Beta 2 that was released during Google I/O 2023 developers' conference nearly two weeks ago, Google is now releasing Beta 2.1 for Pixel 4a and newer Pixel phones. Google recently took to the Android Beta Program subreddit to announce the massive changelog of the latest Android 14 Beta 2.1 update with the build number UPB2.230407.019. Being an X.1 build, the update primarily aims to iron out a long list of issues with Beta 2. Foremost, Android 14 Beta 2.1 patches the bug that prevented users from exiting Android 14 beta testing. The update adds the May 2023 security patches to specific models, including the Pixel 6 series and Pixel 6a on Verizon. Next, the update fixes a bug that previously hid the actual battery percentage and showed 0% instead. It also patches issues with the phones' audio and rubs out what was causing several apps, including Google Photos, to crash. Additionally, the update fixes problems with Always-On Display, including scenarios with missing Google Messages notifications or jitter when using Android Auto. Lastly, it also patches the issue that made the Google TV app disappear in picture-in-picture mode when gesture navigation was turned on. If you are already registered as an Android beta tester, you can check for the update under Settings > System > System Update if it hasn't already popped up in the notifications. But if you aren't part of the beta yet and would like to test it, you can enroll for Android 14 Beta on your Pixel phone(s) by going to the dedicated portal and selecting the suitable device. However, before you enroll to receive Android 14 Beta updates on your phone, remember that it may still not be free of bugs as we are still a few months away from receiving a release candidate. Besides a buggy performance, beta updates may also break functionality for crucial apps, especially for banking and payments. Returning from the beta to a stable Android 13 version will require you to factory reset your smartphone, so ensure you weigh the prospects before making the leap. With Android 14, Google pegs many features around AI, such as lockscreen customizations, emoji-based and AI-generated wallpapers, a major update to Find My Device, contextual back gesture, and much more announced at Google I/O 2023. However, a lot of these features have yet to make it to the available builds and can be expected to be added in the weeks leading to the final release (tentatively in August or September based on previous releases). We, thus, recommend you wait for a few months and avoid enrolling in Android 14 if you are especially looking to try out these new features.

  6. Google unveils new Vulnerability Reward Program Initiatives for Android by Paul Hill One of the ways Google discovers security issues in Android is through its Vulnerability Reward Program. Researchers are able to submit Android vulnerabilities they discover, allowing Google to fix them. To improve the system, Google is adding a new quality rating system for security vulnerability reports that have a higher impact. Under the new regime, vulnerability reports will be rated as High, Medium, or Low quality based on the amount of detail provided in the report. Google hopes the new system will encourage researchers to submit more detailed reports so it can address the issues more quickly. As a byproduct of this, it expects that researchers will receive higher bounty rewards. In addition to the report quality rating system, Google is increasing the rewards for the most critical vulnerabilities up to $15,000. This should make it more appealing for researchers to spend time looking for bugs in Android, rather than some other company’s product. Google said that it’s looking for accurate and detailed descriptions, root cause analysis, proof-of-concept, reproducibility, and evidence of reachability in reports. Google also said it will no longer give moderate severity issues a Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) designation but will only do so for critical and high severity issues. If you’re interested in getting involved, check out Google’s public rules page.
  7. Android to iPhone migration is again on the rise, claims new report by Aditya Tiwari The number of users flocking from Android to iPhone is at the highest in the last five years. According to a new report by the research firm CIRP, around 15% of buyers in the US who bought an iPhone in the 12 months ending in March 2023, reported switching from an Android phone. On the other hand, around 83% of the buyers reported they already had an iPhone. As per the report, it's a 4% increase in the count of Android switchers over the previously recorded year ending in March 2022. The firm analyzed the iPhone purchase data for the past nine years, according to which, the highest share of Android to iPhone switches was 21% in the 12 months ending in March 2016. Furthermore, it was back in 2018 when the number of new Android switchers was 15% as it declined through the years. Other than Android, the remaining 1% to 2% of users made their switch from basic phones or were first-time iPhone owners. "Switching mobile operating systems is perceived as a challenge by smartphone owners, so loyalty to an operating system remains very high. Still, switching does happen, and we track it in our surveys. In the past year or two, former Android users appear to account for an increased percentage of iPhone buyers," says CIRP in its report. Apple's iPhone has reserved the top spot even during times when the global smartphone market is on a decline. Recently, the company revealed in its latest earnings call that the iPhone division crunched $51 billion in revenue in the second quarter. With that said, analysts have also attributed the increased iPhone sales to the longevity of Apple's devices and the stickiness of its ecosystem. Source: CIRP (paywall) via 9to5Mac
  8. Google is adding the ability to use your Pixel as a dashcam by Steve Bennett Overnight it has been found that Google launched an internal testing build referred to as a "dogfood" build of its Personal Safety app to the Play Store. Within this new build a new feature has been found which gives Pixel owners the ability to use the device as a dashcam. The build number of the Personal Safety app, version 2023.04.27.532191641.8-dogfood, contains a feature within the "Be Prepared" section of the home tab of the app labelled "Dashcam." Upon selecting this feature, it goes through setup screens which give options such as enabling or disabling audio, and launching automatically when connecting to vehicle bluetooth. Screenshot of the main page - Source: 9to5Google The key details of the feature are that it allows for recording up to 24 hours per video, or until recording is manually stopped, in the background. The videos that are saved are compressed to save space, and Google lists the average video size as 30 MB per minute. It also has a responsibility section covering usage of devices on the road and what you do with the footage that you have recorded. The settings page for Dashcam once it is set up - Source: 9to5Google The settings also allow for a timeframe to be set for how long the device keeps recorded video saved, with the default setting to delete any footage being "After 3 days". When reviewing any recorded videos, a standard share sheet is presented to the user as well as a delete button. Overall, the feature appears to be almost complete and ready to launch, however, no timeframe has been provided at present for when this will be made generally available to all. Source: 9to5Google

  11. Android tablets and foldable phones will be getting special versions of apps by John Callaham As part of Google I/O 2023, the company officially announced the new Pixel Fold and revealed more about the Pixel Tablet. Both devices have larger screens than most Android devices. Today, the company announced it has worked with first and third-party app makers to create over 50 versions of popular apps that will work with those larger displays. In Google's blog post, it stated that the apps can also adapt to foldable screens to change layouts if it moves between a standard smartphone screen and the larger foldable phone screen. Here's an example with the Google Calendar app: You can view your monthly calendar on the left and details of your day’s events on the right. A new navigation bar on the top makes it easy to switch between different views (e.g. day, week, month). The app also smoothly transitions from a foldable phone’s front screen through to the inner screen. Other apps that work with larger screens include Calm, Candy Crush Soda Saga, YouTube, and Peloton. These updates will roll out over the next few weeks. The Google Play Store has also been updated for these screens: You can now see immersive trailer videos of games you are interested in on the large screen, view app ratings based on the type of form factor you are using, and use one device to effortlessly install apps across all your Android devices. Stay tuned as we will have more news from Google I/O
  12. Google will soon help Android owners find their device even if its offline by John Callaham As part of Google I/O 2023, the company announced a new way for Android phone owners to find them, even if the phone is currently offline. It's an update to the Find My Device app that will use Bluetooth connections to basically crowdsource a lost phone's location: Google stated: We’ve heard from you that being able to locate devices that are offline or that don’t have location capabilities would make keeping track of your devices more seamless. That’s why later this summer, we're launching a refreshed Find My Device experience that makes it easier than ever to locate your devices and belongings quickly and securely by ringing compatible devices or viewing their location on a map in the app – even when they’re offline. The new Find My Device network will harness over a billion Android devices across the world to help you locate your missing belongings like headphones, tracker tags, or even your phone via Bluetooth proximity. Google added this new Bluetooth feature for finding devices will use end-to-end encryption for extra safety. It also repeated an announcement with Apple that it was developing a way to combat unwanted tracking of wireless devices with a new joint specification that should be approved by the end of 2023.
  13. WhatsApp says mic usage in background on Android devices is due to an Android bug by Mehrotra A Meta owned WhatsApp has been constantly under the microscope for playing fast and loose with privacy even though the company claims to provide a secure and privateway to communicate with people. Now, a Twitter engineer has discovered that WhatsApp accessed his Pixel 7 Pro's microphone during the night even though he was not the one using it. In a tweet Foad Dabiri mentioned that WhatsApp has been using his phone's microphone in background during the night and since the morning. Over the last 24 hours we’ve been in touch with a Twitter engineer who posted an issue with his Pixel phone and WhatsApp. We believe this is a bug on Android that mis-attributes information in their Privacy Dashboard and have asked Google to investigate and remediate. https://t.co/MnBi3qE6Gp — WhatsApp (@WhatsApp) May 9, 2023 WhatsApp refuted the claims saying that this is an Android bug "that mis-attributes information in their Privacy Dashboard" and that the company had asked Google to investigate the issue. Furthermore, WhatsApp reiterated that users have full control over their mic settings and that the app will "only accesses the mic when a user is making a call or recording a voice note or video". Users have full control over their mic settings Once granted permission, WhatsApp only accesses the mic when a user is making a call or recording a voice note or video - and even then, these communications are protected by end-to-end encryption so WhatsApp cannot hear them — WhatsApp (@WhatsApp) May 9, 2023 Meanwhile, Twitter CEO, Elon Musk took this opportunity to remind his followers that they should not trust WhatsApp. WhatsApp cannot be trusted https://t.co/3gdNxZOLLy — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 9, 2023 This is not the first time users have reported seeing WhatsApp access microphone even when they were not using the app. As documented by PiunikaWeb, some users have noticed this issue for more than a month with no confirmed fix in sight. In case you are worried about privacy, you can go to your phone's setting and disable microphone access to WhatsApp until the issue is resolved. Furthermore, the recent versions of Android come with a Privacy Dashboard that gives you a timeline of when an app accessed your microphone for better transparency.

Today, Microsoft announced that members of the Microsoft 365 Insider program can try out a new feature in the Android and iOS app that lets users sign PDF files. Microsoft's blog post states: Many of you use your mobile devices to remain productive on the go. You’ve shared that one task you want to be able to complete in such situations is signing a PDF. 15. Google's Nearby Share Android to Windows file feature is now available worldwide by John Callaham In April, Google announced it had extended its Nearby Share Android file sharing feature so it would work with Windows PCs. However, that feature was only available in the US and a few other countries. Now, that situation has changed and the Nearby Share feature is available (mostly) worldwide. Google's support page for Nearby Share (via 9to5Google) was quietly updated to state the feature is available around the world. There are four countries where it is not available: Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria. That's because Google cannot legally do business in those countries due to US trade restrictions. The feature is still labeled as a Beta, and it also still won't work with Windows PCs with ARM processors. However, it will still work with Windows 10 and 11 PCs with 64-bit processors, and with Android devices that have Android 6.0 or above. In order to share files between two devices, they must support Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. They should also connect to the same network. and the devices should be within 16 feet of each other. If you use the same Google Account on your smartphone and your Windows PC, you can seamlessly transfer files from each device without approval with Nearby Share. You can download Nearby Share Beta for Windows from the official website.
  16. Google is now serving ads in search history on Play Store by Ishtiaqe Hanif Google adds another place to put ads with their April 2023 Google System Updates. While it brings useful updates including Wear updates to improve battery life, improved privacy, and stability for Auto, PC, and Android phones, the update also includes a few ways to push ads to consumers through the Play Store. According to the changes posted on its support page, Google rolled out new features to help users discover the apps and games they love. It also writes, phone users will see suggestions for limited-time events and sponsored suggestions next to past searches while starting a new search. You can observe this behavior without any user input, just after tapping on the search bar inside the Play Store. According to a few users on Telegram, the Google Play Store is starting to show ads for apps in the search screen. Is anyone else seeing this? I've only heard two users report this so far. pic.twitter.com/j32RpBIWBq — Mishaal Rahman (@MishaalRahman) April 25, 2023 While the Play Store is filled with ads in every nook and cranny, the only screen without any ads was the overlaying search bar with past searches. Besides ads, it can also show useful highlights for apps and games. These banners will disappear once shown and usually doesn't show a second time. This update is being pushed out to users with the Google System Updates April 2023 and Google Play Store v35.0 onwards. Via: 9to5Google
  17. Google bringing AI-powered Smart Reply feature "Magic Compose" to Android by Ishtiaqe Hanif Alphabet subsidiary Google is pushing towards introducing AI in all of its products. Google is bringing AI-powered features to its RCS messaging app. Previously Google introduced Smart Compose to Messages. It can be found within the settings options of the app under Smart Reply and Suggested Actions. Based on machine learning, it suggested actions and replies relevant to the message received. Now leaked images show Google is working on "Magic Compose", an AI-powered typing assistant that can suggest better-personalized replies in the context of the conversation. According to the leaked screenshots, Messages will offer replies in lyrical format, formal, chill, and short replies. It will give users multiple samples of replies to choose from. The suggestion can also be tailored to the input prompt provided by the user. Source: 9to5Google In the leaked screenshot shared with 9to5Google, we can see the Magic Compose option under the settings page of Suggestions. It shows an "Experiment" label, indicating the feature is still under development. There's also a disclaimer saying the conversation is generated by Google on their servers. Since internet communication is involved, it can incur carrier charges. Users should be aware of the privacy implications. To get access to this feature earlier, you have to have the Messages by Google app installed from this link. Then you have to enroll for beta testing here. Source: 9to5Google via PhoneArena
  18. Google is reportedly working to add Bard to its Pixel phones via a widget by John Callaham Google's Bard is still trying to catch up with OpenAI's ChatGPT and especially with Microsoft's Bing Chat for generative AI development. Today, a new report says that Google is developing a way for its Pixel phones to access Bard without having to go through a web browser. 9to5Google reports that it has examined code from an unnamed app from Google that shows the company is working on an Android-based homescreen widget for Bard. There's no word on what kind of form this widget could take, although the article speculates it could be a stand-alone app, or one that's incorporated into the Google Search app. The article adds that the new Bard widget would be an exclusive feature for its own Pixel smartphones and the upcoming Pixel Tablet. Of course, Microsoft has already added Bing Chat to its mobile Bing app, along with Bing Chat functionality in Skype and Edge. Google's efforts would simply bring Bard close to what Microsoft has in place for Bing Chat. Keep in mind that this information has not yet been confirmed by Google so take it with some grains of salt. We will almost certainly learn more about Google's plans for Bard, and a ton of other stuff, next week at the Google I/O dev conference on May 10.
  19. Google's AI-powered privacy platform Checks is making compliance simpler for developers by Ishtiaqe Hanif Introduced in February 2022 as part of its Area 120 incubator program, Google Checks was created to aid increasingly concerned app developers about privacy rights and data collection. It helped developers by giving them access to easy-to-use tools to make privacy compliance simpler and save time. Today, Google announced they have fully integrated Checks into their product line. According to a poll by McKinsey, 52% of B2B purchasers have ceased business activities with companies that have violated their digital trust. Checks leverage Google's cutting-edge Large Language Models (LLMs) and app understanding technologies to offer automated analysis, comprehensive monitoring, and pertinent recommendations. This enables organizations to transform their insights into actionable steps, with all the features easily accessible from a user-friendly dashboard. Checks provides services in three key product areas: Compliance Monitoring helps companies identify potential regulatory and mobile app store compliance issues by using automated tests to scan an app and its privacy disclosures, and provides actionable recommendations to help address any identified issues. Data Monitoring provides end-to-end visibility of an app’s data collection and sharing behaviors, enabling teams to more efficiently manage their data governance practices. Store Disclosure Support helps companies ensure that their Google Play Data safety section is accurate and up-to-date. After being integrated into a developer's workflow, it will automatically prompt them with compliance alerts and recommendations. This feature works for pre-production apps as well. It ensures developers have access to resources for better compliance before an app launches. Google says the new program has already helped app development companies like Angry Birds creators Rovio, along with Miniclip, Kongregate, Crayola, and Yousician, makes sure that their games and apps are following privacy guidelines. One interesting thing is that Google Checks is working with the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), the US video game rating agency. Its Privacy Certified team collaborates with Google Checks so that members of the ESRB will release games that are in line with the current privacy regulations. Source: Google
  20. Apple and Google put down their fists and join together to combat unwanted wireless tracking by John Callaham Normally, Apple and Google are fierce competitors, especially in the smartphone business with their competing iOS and Android operating systems. Today, the two companies temporarily put down their pitchforks to announce a joint venture that aims to combat unwanted tracking of wireless devices. Apple's press release states: Today Apple and Google jointly submitted a proposed industry specification to help combat the misuse of Bluetooth location-tracking devices for unwanted tracking. The first-of-its-kind specification will allow Bluetooth location-tracking devices to be compatible with unauthorized tracking detection and alerts across iOS and Android platforms. Apple, of course, has its own AirTag device that is supposed to help people find lost luggage or other personal items. However, since the devices launched, it has been used to track actual people. In 2022, Apple set up some protections to keep AirTags from being used to track humans. Today's joint announcement with Google seems to be an extension of those efforts. The press release states that other companies that make their own Bluetooth tracking devices, including Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, eufy Security, and Pebblebee, have "expressed support for the draft specification". Hopefully, that means they will incorporate the new rules in future products. Apple and Google will submit a draft of their unwanted wireless tracking specifications to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Businesses and groups who have an interest in this draft will be able to make comments on it, and Apple and Google will take that feedback and make any changes to the draft. The plan is to submit the final specifications by the end of 2023, after which they will be incorporated into future updates for iOS and Android.

  23. Google to get its next Play Store rival in India by Aditya Tiwari Time and again various tech companies have tried to challenge the dominance of Google Play. Whether they have succeeded or not is a different story. However, the latest name to join that list is the Indian fintech giant PhonePe. TechCrunch reports the Walmart-backed company is working on its own app store for Android devices. As per the internal document seen by the publication, the upcoming PhonePe app store will offer hyper-localized services and help developers with high-quality user acquisition. PhonePe's Android app store will be available in 12 languages and will offer 24x7 live chat support, according to the document. The company is also in talks with various device makers in India regarding its Google Play alternative. "We expect to be live on all Android OEMs within the first few months of launch. We have already closed terms with one of the largest OEMs and are trying to get the others rapidly onboard over the next couple of months,” a PhonePe spokesperson told the publication. PhonePe was founded in 2015 and the UPI-based payment app is now a direct competitor to Google Pay in India with over 450 million registered users. The company already offers a platter of smartphone apps inside its payment app which can be used without downloading them separately. Speaking of alternatives, there are several app stores for Android already on the market, including Samsung's Galaxy Store, Amazon App Store, and F-Droid. PhonePe's app store efforts have surfaced just a few months after India's antitrust watchdog imposed a fine on Google over anti-competitive practices on Android. Source: TechCrunch

  25. Report: Google's Android 11, Android 12 lost some market share, Android 13 going strong by Aditya Tiwari Android 11 R is leading the race with a 23.5% market share, according to the April 2023 Android distribution statistics sourced by 9to5Google. It has been years since Google stopped updating these numbers on the Android distribution dashboard, but the said data is now available via Android Studio. The latest public release Android 13, which came out in August last year, has shown considerable improvement in the last few months. It has taken a big jump from a 5% market share in January 2023 to 12.1% in April 2023. It seems to have eaten the share of older versions, all of which have shown varying amounts of drops in their numbers. Here is a comparison between the Android version distribution for the months of January and April 2023: Android Version Jan 2023 (%) April 2023 (%) Android 13 T 5.0 12.1 Android 12 S 18.9 16.5 Android 11 R 24.4 23.5 Android 10 Q 19.5 18.5 Android 9 Pie 13.2 12.3 Android 8 Oreo 9.5 6.7 Android 7 Nougat 3.7 3.3 Android 6 Marshmallow 2.8 2.5 Android 5 Lollipop 2.1 1.9 Android 4 KitKat 0.7 0.6 Third-party data provided by StatCounter paints a slightly different picture, where Android 12 has the highest share of 22.22% as of March 2023. Meanwhile, Android 13 is sitting in the third position with a market share of 17.65%. For comparison, iPhones have delivered better performance when it comes to the latest software adoption. Apple's iOS 16 update was running on 72% of iPhones after five months of its public release. It should be noted that the entire iPhone development, including both hardware and software, is tightly controlled by Apple which is not the case with Android. However, the latest numbers have shown up soon after Google started the rollout of Android 14 Beta 1. Source: 9to5Google
