  1. Insomniac's Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is coming to PC in July by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Despite holding a major games showcase after a two-year year gap and showing off plenty of experiences, it seems Sony had held back an announcement that would have left a lot of PC gamers happy. In a Surprise announcement today with a simple blog post, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is getting a PC port on July 26. Catch the new PC reveal and features trailer of the port above. Released in 2021 for the PlayStation 5 as an exclusive, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart arrived as the ninth entry in the popular third-person platforming series. Franchise developer Insomniac Games returned for this entry too, taking a break from all its Spider-Man duties and delivering a game that was well-received and won several awards. Coming back to the PC version, its development is headed by the now Sony-owned porting specialist Nixxes Software, with Insomniac also lending support. "We are thrilled and honored to bring this iconic franchise to a new audience," said Nixxes community specialist Julian Huijbregts. "If you haven’t played a game from this series before, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is an excellent one to start with. The game is a visual spectacle that is perfectly suitable for newcomers thanks to a standalone storyline and the introduction of two brand new characters: Rivet & Kit." As with most ports of PlayStation exclusives, the PC version touts some new features over the original release too. This includes ray-traced reflections and shadows with multiple quality levels to choose from depending on the hardware. Ultra-wide monitor support extending to 21:9, 32:9, and up to 48:9 aspect ratio setups (for both gameplay and cutscenes) is confirmed too. Nvidia DLSS 3, AMD FSR 2, Intel XeSS, and Insomniac's own Temporal Injection technologies are also included to boost frame rates, which is now uncapped on the PC release as well. Moreover, full mouse and keyboard as well as controller support with rebindable keys are incoming too. Being a Sony game, the DualSense controller is supported as well, with wired connections offering the iconic haptic feedback and dynamic trigger effects. When the game was first released, it used the included SSD in the PlayStation 5 to help it handle its gameplay features, which included warping in and out of different settings with no load times. Sony has yet to reveal the PC specs for the game, but we expect that the PC version it might require an SSD as well Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart's July 26 launch will happen on Steam and the Epic Games Store for $59.99. Those who pre-order the title will also receive early access to Pixelizer weapon and Carbonox armor set.
  2. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart centered State of Play set for April 29, female Lombax detailed by Namerah Saud Fatmi Today Sony announced that the next State of Play is scheduled to take place this week on April 29. The virtual gaming showcase to take place on Thursday at 2:00 PM PT is going to focus on Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, an upcoming title for the PlayStation 5. Following anticipation from long-term fans, video game developer Insomniac Games announced Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart in June 2020. Departing from the traditional style of the Ratchet and Clank series, a mysterious female Lombax who will be a playable character was also shown. Since then, not much has been revealed about the new playable character. Along with the date and time for the next State of Play, today Sony and Insomniac released a new gameplay trailer for Rift Apart. As promised last year, Insomniac has finally unveiled more information about the female Lombax in the upcoming title in the Ratchet and Clank universe. The trailer revealed the name of the mysterious Lombax to be Rivet. 🎶 Her name was Rivet all along! 😉 pic.twitter.com/XiFRdMIFVC — Insomniac Games (@insomniacgames) April 26, 2021 More information about the game's story was also detailed. Protagonists Ratchet and Clank get separated across dimensions while chasing Nefarious and the Dimensionater. According to the new trailer, part of the game will be set in an alternate dimension where Dr. Nefarious "always wins". In a cutscene, Clank is discovered by Rivet who lives in that alternate world. It appears that she will help him find Ratchet. The latest trailer from Insomniac also displayed Rivet's fighting style, which is identical to the way Ratchet plays. Both Lombaxes appear to use the same array of weapons in the gameplay snippets including Ratchet's signature Omniwrench. You can watch the latest gameplay trailer for Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart below. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is due out June 11, 2021, for the PlayStation 5 exclusively. Pre-orders for the game are currently open and can be placed on the PlayStation Store. It is priced at $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $79.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition.
  3. Insomniac confirms Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will support 60fps, but not at 4K by Namerah Saud Fatmi Image via Famitsu Last night at the gamescom 2020 Opening Night Live event, a host of next-generation games were shown-off. Insomniac's upcoming new instalment in the Ratchet and Clank universe was among those titles. The video game developer shared an extended gameplay demo of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, displaying the capabilities of the PlayStation 5's powerful SSD. Speaking in an interview with Famitsu, Insomniac Games shared some more information about its upcoming PS5 exclusive today. Players will be able to play the new Ratchet and Clank title at 60fps. In an interview with @WeeklyFamitsu today we confirmed #RatchetPS5 will offer an option to play at 60fps! https://t.co/HRFKHgDE3c pic.twitter.com/7TdyaTdtAv — Insomniac Games (@insomniacgames) August 28, 2020 Unfortunately, it seems that players will have to trade-off 4K resolution in exchange for 60fps. In what seems to be a bizarre decision for a next-gen game, Insomniac has decided to provide players with two options. They can either choose to play with a resolution of 1080p at 60fps or opt for 4K at 30fps. Speaking to Famitsu, Mike Daily from Insomniac also commented on the newly introduced female Lombax. When asked, Daily said that more details about the new playable character will be revealed in the future. A summary of the game was provided by Sony along with the gameplay demo yesterday. It reads: "Ratchet and Clank find themselves at odds with their archnemesis, Dr. Nefarious. Only this time, he’s equipped with the dangerous Dimensionator, a device with the power to travel to other dimensions. The duo fights their way through an army of hired Goons in Megalopolis until something happens and they are ripped apart. Where are they now?" Insomniac Games first announced Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart roughly two months back in June. The game is set to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive and is currently expected to launch with Sony's upcoming console this holiday.
  4. Insomniac Games reveals a new playable character in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart by Namerah Saud Fatmi Last week, Insomniac Games revealed the next title in the Spider-Man line of games, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Taking viewers by surprise, Insomniac also announced another game for the PlayStation 5, a new entry to its cult classic Ratchet & Clank series titled Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The video game series features the galaxy's favorite Lombax, Ratchet, and his trusty robot sidekick Clank. Several of its popular third-person shooter titles have been released across four generations of the PlayStation, including the PlayStation 5. Today the creator of the series announced a new playable character for the upcoming PS5 exclusive: the mysterious new female Lombax showcased in the reveal trailer. Play as Ratchet AND a mysterious new female Lombax from another dimension. #RatchetPS5 #RiftApart pic.twitter.com/aMDSAB77iG — Insomniac Games (@insomniacgames) June 16, 2020 Insomniac Games also confirmed what could already be gleaned from the announcement trailer for Rift Apart, that the new character is from another dimension and that female Lombaxes do have tails. Story-wise not much has been revealed for the game yet, although fans will be happy to hear that it seems to pick up where the 2013 title Into the Nexus left off. The gist of it seems to be that the intergalactic duo will once again be separated due to a rift in the dimensions. This aligns with the ending of Into the Nexus, the last game to continue the storyline chronologically, where Clank finally acquired the Dimensionator and was hoping to help his buddy find the lost Lombax race. In the announcement trailer posted by Insomniac, viewers can see Ratchet and Clank flying across multiple collapsing dimensions with seamless gameplay and no lengthy, tedious loading screens. Apart from portraying the story and gameplay, this might have also been a strategic move to showcase the power and capabilities of the PS5's SSD. Not much else has been released pertaining to the upcoming Ratchet & Clank title as of yet. Hopefully Insomniac will shed more light on the matter in the coming future, especially as the launch of Sony's next-gen console approaches.

Sony's PSX 2015 recap and impressions

Sony's PSX 2015 recap and impressions by Chris Schroeder Sony's Playstation Experience for 2015 has come and gone. For all of you current and prospective PS4 owners out there, this is a chance to see what games will be hitting your console in the coming year or so. I've combed through all of the trailers and dug up some extra details on select games and put together a list that includes a majority of releases for 2016. They'll be displayed in three categories: "impressive" (likely excellent), "questionable" (could be good, could be bad), and "not ready for primetime", with a summary to talk about what we saw at PSX this year. Several of these games aren't anywhere close to done yet, so final judgments are better saved for the time being. Xbox One fans should stick around, because there is news in here for you as well. Impressive Ratchet and Clank - One of the most composed demos at PSX 2015, the Ratchet and Clank for PS4 showed off gorgeous Pixar-like cutscenes to tell the story of how Ratchet meets Clank and demonstrated a smooth 3rd person shooter/action experience. An old-favorite and from the creators of Sunset Overdrive, Ratchet and Clank is set for release on April 12, 2016 and a movie is scheduled to hit theaters on April 28, 2016. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - Nathan Drake is back and so is his presumably-dead brother. A slick cinematic cutscene shows to two reuniting and reminiscing over Nathan's experiences in previous games. Just as Nathan wraps up his stories, his brother reveals that he's in a lot of trouble and the trailer fades to black. No doubt Uncharted 4 is one of the most important franchises to Playstation, and 2016 holds the next chapter. Final Fantasy VII Remake - Definitely the Final Fantasy fan favorite, this remake is a dramatic overhaul of the original Playstation title in HD. This is not a Playstation exclusive, but it will see a release on the PS4 first before moving to other platforms. One might notice that the footage shown off is in drastic need of optimization, as frame rates were noticeably-short of even 30 FPS. No release date has been confirmed at this time. Dead Star - A more open-world approach to the old school scrolling space shooters like Raiden and R-Type, Dead Star looks to be a deeper version of those aforementioned arcade classics. A PS4 exclusive, Dead Star expects to launch in early 2016. Destiny: The Taken King - This expansion came out months ago, but Bungie is set to push another update that will include the long-rumored racing element with dedicated tracks and new Sparrows to go head to head with other Guardians within Destiny. The Sparrow Racing League, the name for this new racing variant within Destiny, begins December 8, 2015. Paragon - What looked like a shiny new Playstation 4 MOBA, Paragon features exactly what you'd expect from any other MOBA game. Three attack/defense lanes to patrol, easy-to-kill mobs for leveling up, and boss-like variables that will force your team to work together. Paragon wasn't shown off in extensive detail, but it's definitely at least a cooperative title that definitely peaks the interest of PS4 owners that might be into the rise of console MOBAs. Made by Epic Games (Gears of War), Paragon's paid early access beta kick off spring of 2016, with the open access beta rolling out during the summer. The title is destined for PC and PS4 only. Questionable Eagle Flight - Ubisoft is getting involved with VR and Eagle Flight is how the product of the company's labor. You're an eagle soaring through the skies and down in the canals of what had to be a Battleborn-style rendering of Paris with the soundtrack of Assassin's Creed. The trailer looked nice enough, but offered no real idea of what the purpose of the game was. Fat Princess Adventures - A four-player cooperative action game that, like several other titles shown at PSX, doesn't intend to take itself too seriously. Battle all kinds of monsters, discover Sweethearts (yes, the Valentine's Day candy) and avoid falling fat chefs. There's plenty of potential here, but it looks like the game relies heavily on your seeing the witty humor throughout to truly enjoy it. MLB the Show 15 - Another chapter in the sports cog that is MLB: The Show, Playstation's baseball franchise hopes you're ready for the annual plate appearance of MLB The Show. Baseball purists will likely enjoy the game greatly, but baseball is on the decline in North America these past few years and could easily affect the interest in a game that follows the Madden formula of yearly installments with only minor additions and adjustments to previous entries. Brutal - Essentially Tron displayed using LED suits that outline most of the characters and enemies rather than a full rendering of the world around you. It certainly catches the eye, but whether this action-fighter will make any waves is entirely up in the air. Not ready for primetime Rez Infinite VR - An Xbox One launch, Rez HD was an arcade title originally released by Q Entertainment and Microsoft Game Studios for the Xbox 360. The game earned high remarks from critics and seemed to fare well with fans, though without as much excitement as critics. Sony is making a VR version of Rez titled Rez Infinite VR. For an immersive experience, the demo did not impress, but if Rez holds a special place in your heart you might find something to get excited about here. Ace Combat 7 - Not usually a weak title, Namco's Ace Combat 7 had a very weak announcement trailer full of muddled and bland dialog and a random dude ready to perform a Red Bull base jump from the top of a stratosphere-high tower. The game definitely had a good look to it, but decide for yourself if this looks like something you'd ever consider worth your money. Job Simulator - Another VR effort, Sony wants you to go to work. That very idea isn't likely to get anyone with a pulse excited, but if it's any consolation, it looks like you can go ham on those annoying cubicles with dual staplers and hurl coffee cups about. The Modern Zombie Taxi Company - Think zombies and bumper cars with zany background music in a world that would give South Park a run for visuals. Another VR effort, Sony and Highwire Games think you might be interested to crash into every object and every un-living thing you see. Summary There were some fantastic titles to be seen at PSX 2015 this year. Final Fantasy is a sure hit, Uncharted 4 has the potential to be a big system seller and Ratchet and Clank expects to be every bit as enjoyable as previous installments of the game. Sony even has a number of titles coming out from its old PS2 catalog over time for those wishing to relive the past. However, several games, including the remake of Final Fantasy VII, are not exclusive to the PS4, so while there are great games coming to the platform I had few reasons why the PS4 was a must-have console for gaming in 2016. Unfortunately, VR-geared titles made me think Sony is just trying to stockpile the VR vault so there's something to play when Playstation VR eventually launches, but much of the content was, sadly, forgettable and leads me to believe that this cool piece of tech could be underutilized for a bit after launch. The positive spin here is that 2016 isn't even here yet, so there's still time for Sony to give us more reasons why the best gaming experience around will be on PS4.
