  1. Microsoft has signed deal with CoreWeave for AI computing power, say sources by Paul Hill Microsoft has signed a deal with CoreWeave, a provider of AI computing power, that could be worth billions of dollars over a number of years. The news was disclosed by sources familiar with the matter, to CNBC. While Microsoft and CoreWeave have failed to confirm the information, the sources told CNBC that the deal was made to ensure that OpenAI’s ChatGPT had enough computing power going forward. Through a partnership with Microsoft, OpenAI currently uses Microsoft Azure infrastructure to run ChatGPT, which is resource intensive. It seems that the agreement was made earlier this year. In recent weeks, we’ve seen the price of NVIDIA’s shares rocket up as investors anticipate higher earnings for the company on the back of generative AI services like ChatGPT. CoreWeave offers cloud computing services also powered by NVIDIA hardware. The revelation about this deal comes just one day after CoreWeave announced that it had secured $200 million in a Series B funding extension, bringing the round’s total to $421 million. The $200 million was invested by Magnetar Capital. According to CoreWeave, the funding is helping it fill a gap in the market that legacy cloud computing providers are struggling to fill. “By combining easy access to high-powered GPUs for training AI models with fast and flexible infrastructure and by focusing on a specific type of compute, CoreWeave continues to differentiate itself from other companies in the space,” said Ernie Rogers, Magnetar’s chief operating officer. “Magnetar believes CoreWeave sits in a sweet spot for enabling world-class results across a number of industries. We are proud to have been the lead investor for CoreWeave’s Series B funding round and its extension.” Now that knowledge of this agreement is public, it could add even more fuel to NVIDIA’s stock price as it suggests the company could see even more demand for its products as CoreWeave seeks to provide resources for Microsoft and OpenAI. 3. Amazon's cloud computing unit plans to invest €2.5bn in Spain, boost job creation by Hemant Saxena Amid recent news of Amazon laying off thousands of employees, the company has made a new announcement. The U.S.-based company is investing an amount of €2.5 billion in Spain over the coming 10 years, this will support 1,300 full-time jobs in the country. Besides accelerating digital transformation and creating a local tech community in the region, the investment will likely add €1.8 billion to the Spanish gross domestic product. Cloud computing refers to the on-demand delivery of IT resources over the Internet. It eliminates the need to purchase, own or maintain any physical data centers and servers. As such, you can access technology services, like storage, databases, etc. on an as-needed basis from the service providers. Currently, Amazon's cloud computing unit - AWS (Amazon Web Services) occupies the largest share of cloud platforms adopted worldwide. It is then followed by Microsoft (Azure) and Google (Google Cloud Platform). Amazon claims that the expansion of its cloud computing services in Spain will drive innovation by offering businesses even greater choices for running their applications and serving end users from data centers located in the region. AWS Cloud spans 93 Availability Zones within 29 geographic regions around the world. The company has announced plans for 18 more Availability Zones and 6 more AWS Regions in Australia, Canada, India, Israel, New Zealand, and Thailand.
  4. Microsoft is working with Nvidia to build confidential GPUs in the cloud by Usama Jawad Many organizations, both big and small, utilize the cloud for their data-related needs in storage and AI solutions. In order to secure the privacy and security of sensitive data, it is essential to use confidential computing. For those unaware, this is basically a set of hardware and software controls that governs how the data is being shared and used, as well as how data owners can validate these processes. Intel and AMD CPUs already enable the creation of trusted execution environments (TEEs) to power confidential computing at a CPU-level. TEEs ensure that the data remains encrypted at rest, in transit, and even in use. It also offers remote attestation to validate the configuration of the hardware and and grant data access only to required algorithms. Microsoft's confidential computing solutions on Azure utilize the same principles too. However, existing solutions are tied to TEEs being built in CPUs, so Microsoft is now looking to extend this boundary to GPUs as well, making sure that data can be securely offloaded to more powerful hardware for computation needs. This is even more important when it comes to AI workloads for organizations, and Microsoft is collaborating with Nvidia on this front. Microsoft has noted that this is not a simple implementation as it needs to protect GPUs from various attacks while ensuring that Azure host machines have adequate control for administrative activities. Even at a hardware level, the implementation should not have negative impact on thermals and performance, and ideally, should not require changes to the existing GPU microarchitecture either. The company's vision includes the following capabilities for confidential GPUs: A new mode where all sensitive state on the GPU, including GPU memory, is isolated from the host A hardware root-of-trust on the GPU chip that can generate verifiable attestations capturing all security sensitive state of the GPU, including all firmware and microcode Extensions to the GPU driver to verify GPU attestations, set up a secure communication channel with the GPU, and transparently encrypt all communications between the CPU and GPU Hardware support to transparently encrypt all GPU-GPU communications over NVLink Support in the guest operating system and hypervisor to securely attach GPUs to a CPU TEE, even if the contents of the CPU TEE are encrypted Microsoft has stated that it has already built confidential computing capabilities in Nvidia A100 Tensor Core GPUs on Azure. This has been done through a new feature called Ampere Protected Memory (APM). The implementation details are highly technical in nature and you can check them out here. This solution is now available in private preview through Azure Confidential GPU VMs. Organizations can use VMs with up to four Nvidia A100 Tensor Core GPUs for their Azure workloads at this point. Microsoft's next steps include ensuring the broader adoption of these practices and working with Nvidia on its Hopper architecture for further enhancements to the existing implementation.
  5. Intel's 'Project Endgame' is a low-latency, cloud computing platform with Arc GPUs [Update] by Alap Naik Desai Intel is quite confident about its upcoming Arc GPUs. The company is even planning a cloud-based remote computing platform based on the Arc discrete GPU architecture. Intel’s "Project Endgame" appears to be a multi-role or multi-purpose platform that could offer a variety of graphics-intensive services through the internet. Intel’s latest investor note indicates the company is “on track” to release products that come under the Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics Group (AXG). As the name suggests, the Visual Compute Roadmap and Strategy discusses the company’s plans for its GPUs. It mentions “Project Endgame”: Project Endgame: Project Endgame will enable users to access Intel Arc GPUs through a service for an always-accessible, low-latency computing experience. Project Endgame will be available later this year. It is apparent that Intel’s upcoming service will be powered by its own Arc discrete graphics cards. The name and description also hint at a cloud-hosted, game streaming service. However, Intel doesn’t make it clear if the service will be geared towards gaming or computing. As Project Endgame merely received two short lines of description, it is difficult to ascertain what exactly Intel is planning. The company has mentioned that Endgame will give users access to Intel Arc GPUs through a cloud service, providing a low-latency computing solution without having the required hardware at users’ premises. This seems a lot like NVIDIA GeForce Now, Amazon Luna, Microsoft xCloud, Sony PlayStation Now, Google Stadia, and so on. However, Intel has clearly refrained from explicitly stating that Project Endgame will be aimed at gamers. Moreover, there are many remotely-hosted game streaming services. Hence, it is quite likely that Intel could offer cloud-based computing solutions to workstations, perhaps similar to Microsoft Windows 365. If Intel’s Arc GPUs are powerful, they could offer capable GPU power to low-powered desktop or laptop computers through the internet. Intel’s Arc GPUs are the company’s big bet this year. This year’s iterations might not compete with the top-end models in the NVIDIA GeForce RTX series. However, they could certainly help the company secure a place in the discrete GPU market, currently dominated by NVIDIA and AMD. [Update] Intel seems to have two possible use-cases in the immediate future. The company could lend the power of Arc GPUs to run hosted Metaverse experiences and/or offer Web3/crypto services. The company has apparently indicated it is prioritizing Web3/crypto programmable GPU functionality from the Arc GPUs. (Thanks Nas for the tip) Source: Digital Trends

  13. The world's first diamond-based quantum accelerator to be deployed in Perth by Ather Fawaz Australian startup Quantum Brilliance announced today that its diamond-based quantum accelerator is slated to be deployed at the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre in Perth, Australia. The startup is backed by The Australian National University and the installation is a part of Pawsey's Quantum Pioneer Program, which aims to push quantum computing research in domains like machine learning, logistics, defense, aerospace, and finance. The firm expects to complete installation by June this year. Once that is done, Pawsey will become one of the few data centers in the world that currently house a ready-to-use quantum computer hosted on the cloud. The key thing to note about the startup's quantum accelerators is that they do not require cryogenic temperatures to operate optimally. By using the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in synthetic diamonds, Quantum Brilliance was able to mediate the effect of magnetic impurities and thermal vibrations in its accelerator. The firm debuted this system last year in March claiming that its qubits have the longest coherence time of any solid-state electron spin at room temperature. This is a concrete step towards the firm's aim to commercialize quantum computers and deploy them in data centers, hospitals, and mines for research, business, and traditional use cases. “It has been a privilege working towards this goal with the fantastic team at Pawsey. We are only starting to see how quantum accelerators can transform industries in Australia and around the world,” said Quantum Brilliance CEO Andrew Horsley, Ph.D. “Because of our unique diamond-based technology, customers can run our quantum computers themselves, and we provide them a full set of tools to explore how quantum can help create new capabilities. We are one of a very small handful of companies with the capability to deliver quantum computing hardware directly to customers.” “I am delighted to see active industry and researcher engagement with quantum computing,” said Pawsey’s Executive Director Mark Stickells. “We are excited to explore the potential of this technology for Australian researchers to further accelerate their scientific workflows using the potential of quantum computing within the advanced infrastructure of a national research supercomputing center.”

  16. Microsoft teams up with Cruise and GM to help commercialize self-driving vehicles by Hamza Jawad In recent months, Microsoft has formed cloud-centric partnerships with a variety of different firms, including Standard Chartered, Mastercard, PepsiCo, and more. Today, the tech giant has announced that it is teaming up with Cruise and General Motors (GM) to help commercialize the former's self-driving vehicles. This is not the first time the Redmond firm has aimed to accelerate the development of self-driving tech through different collaborations. As part of this team-up, Cruise has chosen Azure as its preferred cloud provider, with GM also leveraging it as its preferred public cloud provider. Cruise is hoping that the increased cloud computing capabilities on offer will help make the process of commercializing its unique autonomous vehicle solutions at scale more efficient. On the other end, Microsoft will be looking to enhance its product innovation by availing Cruise's industry expertise. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella commented on this collaboration in the following way: "Advances in digital technology are redefining every aspect of our work and life, including how we move people and goods. As Cruise and GM's preferred cloud, we will apply the power of Azure to help them scale and make autonomous transportation mainstream." In addition to this, Microsoft, GM, Honda, and institutional investors are also going to be making a combined equity investment in Cruise, standing at more than $2 billion, and pushing the post-money valuation of the self-driving car service to $30 billion.
  17. AWS announces two substantial updates to Amazon Braket by Ather Fawaz Back in August, Amazon Braket hit general availability. The service provides remote access to quantum computing simulators and real quantum hardware hosted on the cloud. Since then, it's been integrated into high-end services like Orquestra to enable better quantum software development, especially for enterprise users. Building on this, AWS announced today that Amazon Braket will now support PennyLane, which is an open-source software framework for hybrid quantum computing and quantum machine learning applications. Image via PennyLane Braket's integration with PennyLane should allow customers to train quantum circuits the same way they would train a traditional neural network using common machine learning libraries due to PennyLane's native support for PyTorch and TensorFlow. AWS claims that the quantum circuit's training process will be sped up by up to ten times since the library exploits parallelism. PennyLane is pre-installed in Braket notebooks and you can also install the Braket-PennyLane plugin in your IDE. Once you do this, you can train quantum circuits as you would train neural networks, while also making use of familiar machine learning libraries such as PyTorch and TensorFlow. When you use PennyLane on the managed simulators that are included in Amazon Braket, you can train your circuits up to 10 times faster by using parallel circuit execution. Furthermore, AWS has expanded the choice of simulators available on Braket as well. In addition to the state vector simulator, which could simulate a 34-qubit quantum computer, the newly added tensor network simulator can simulate up to 50 qubits for certain circuits. It does so by constructing a graph of the quantum circuit to find an optimized way to process it. Amazon says that the new tensor network simulator is especially powerful for sparse circuits, circuits with local gates, and other circuits with inherent structure. Overall, this increased power should let customers explore and optimize quantum algorithms at a larger qubit scale.

  20. Intel announces the eASIC N5X to power 5G, AI, cloud, and edge workloads by Ather Fawaz Customized hardware using FPGAs (Field-Programmable Gate Arrays) and ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits) has demonstrated promising results in computationally expensive workloads in the past. As such, we're seeing increased usage of such technologies in the industry today. Today at the Intel FPGA Technology Day, Intel announced the eASIC N5X, its latest offering in the eASIC lineup, which is the firm's intermediary technology between FPGAs and standard-cell ASICs. The eASIC N5X is set to be the first structured eASIC with an Intel FPGA compatible hard processor system. Intel claims that it also offers up to 50% lower core power and lower cost compared to FPGAs, without sacrificing the time to market and lower non-recurring engineering of ASICs. This allows customers to create power-optimized, performant, and differentiated solutions. Intel believes that FPGAs offer the best time-to-market advantage and flexibility for custom designs. Pairing them up with ASICs would provide the optimal hardware-optimized performance at a lower price point. The eASIC N5X can also be paired with the Intel Agilex FPGA family to secure workflows with features like secure boot and strict authentication. Taken together, the new eASIC N5X will be geared specifically towards accelerating customized 5G, AI, cloud, and edge workloads. Further details can be found here.
  21. AWS Nitro Enclaves, a service for processing sensitive data, hits general availability by Ather Fawaz Image via Wall Street Journal Amazon Web Services (AWS) today announced the general availability of AWS Nitro Enclaves, a specific subset of elastic compute cloud (EC2) instances that focus on processing sensitive data. With this release, AWS is targeting customers in industries like defense, entertainment, media, financial services, and sciences that use the computing power of AWS Cloud instances to process sensitive data. Unlike traditional EC2 instances, Nitro Enclaves do not host persistent storage, nor do they support external networking or provide administrator or operator access. This enables Nitro Enclaves in reducing the attack surface for applications with an isolated environment that is tailored to data processing use cases. This isolation means that applications running in an Enclave remain inaccessible to other users and systems, even to users within the customer’s organization. With this isolation, the AWS Nitro Enclave owner can start and stop, or assign resources to an Enclave, but even the owner cannot see what is being processed inside of AWS Nitro Enclaves. In addition to this, it borrows the Nitro Hypervisor technology from traditional EC2 instances to provide CPU and memory isolation for the Enclaves. AWS also launched the AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) for Nitro Enclaves that protects and manages SSL and TLS certificates for their web servers hosted on EC2 instances. Nitro Enclaves will support most of Intel and AMD-based EC2 instance types that are built on the AWS Nitro System. Support for AWS Graviton2-based instances is planned for some time in the first half of the next year. Nitro Enclaves will be available in most major AWS regions. Specific details on that can be found here. If you are interested in getting started with them, you may check out this web page.

  24. IBM says its latest POWER10 CPUs are up to 20x faster than last generation by Sayan Sen IBM has unveiled its latest generation of POWER CPUs dubbed, unsurprisingly, the POWER10. Like previous-gen POWER9, which launched nearly three years ago, the new CPUs are also designed to improve AI processing and are to be deployed as hybrid cloud computing solutions. For example, according to IBM's own benchmark numbers, AI inferencing performance for 8-bit integer operations can be up to a whopping 20x faster than POWER9 solutions. Not only that, single-precision FP32 performance and half-precision BFloat16 performance also see enormous gains of 10x and 15x, respectively. IBM says that the new POWER10 chips are especially optimized to work with the Red Hat OpenShift platform. With POWER10, IBM is moving down to 7nm and will be utilizing Samsung's 7nm EUV node. With this, alongside architectural improvements in the mix, IBM says that its new POWER10 processors are up to three times more energy-efficient than last gen's. A new memory sharing technology called Memory Inception is being introduced by the company which will enable several POWER10 CPUs in a cluster to utilize the same memory pool, potentially increasing processing efficiency, and in turn, saving power. In terms of security, POWER10 features hardware-accelerated AES encryption, as well as newer security protocols like quantum-safe cryptography and fully homomorphic encryption. For added security, container isolation is also present that will prevent breaches from overflowing into other non-affected containers in the same VM space. Availability wise, enterprises and other customers should be able to get their hands on POWER10 systems in the second half of 2021.
  25. Azure Front Door and CDN Rules Engine now generally available by Hamza Jawad In recent cloud-related news, Microsoft unveiled new Azure Machine Learning courses and scholarships on Udacity. The tech giant also signed a five-year deal with John Hopkins Medicine last week, centered around the utilization of Azure. Today, Microsoft has announced that the Rules Engine for Azure Front Door (AFD) and Azure Content Delivery Network (CDN) has been made generally available. The capability first became available in preview for both services back in May. The Rules Engine essentially provides new rules to offer more control and customization over the content being made available to users, and other scenarios. For Azure Front Door, in particular, HTTP request-handling can be specified at the Edge. In the preview stage, lower rule limits were provided. However, following feedback, Microsoft has increased the rule limits to allow up to 25 rules per configuration, for a total of 10 configurations. This means that 250 rules can be created across AFD, without any additional charges. CDN limits have been similarly updated. Users were previously allowed to set five rules at no extra cost. Now, additional rules can be purchased as well, on top of the limit of five free ones already being available. Moreover, match conditions within each rule can now be set up to 10, alongside five actions per rule. You can learn more about the Rules Engine for AFD here, while the CDN Rules Engine documentation can be found here.
