  7. Apple's smartwatch market share declines, Samsung is no longer second by Omer Dursun The global smartwatch market, which had shown consistent growth in recent years, experienced a decline in the first quarter of 2023. According to Counterpoint Research's Global Smartwatch Model Tracker, smartwatch shipments slumped by 1.5% year-over-year in Q1 2023. The shipment slump can be attributed to reduced demand from major players such as Apple and Samsung. One of the significant contributors to the decline in smartwatch shipments is Apple, the leading player in the smartwatch market. The company witnessed a notable decline of 20% in smartwatch shipments during Q1 2023 compared to the same period last year. This decline resulted in Apple's shipments falling below 10 million units for the first time in three years. As a result, Apple's market share dropped from 32% to 26%. The reduced demand for Apple watches can be attributed to the global economic crisis. Another major player in the smartwatch market, Samsung, faced a mixed performance during Q1 2023. While the company witnessed a 15% increase in shipments in North America, it lost ground in other regions. Samsung's global shipments experienced a 15% year-on-year decline and a 21% quarter-on-quarter drop. This decline led to a 1% decrease in Samsung's market share, from 10% to 9%. Interestingly, Galaxy Watches experienced growing popularity in North America during the first quarter of 2023 but faced a decline in other major markets. The decline in global smartwatch shipments during Q1 2023 can be primarily attributed to the prevailing global economic pressures. Financial uncertainties and reduced consumer sentiment impacted the purchasing decisions of buyers, resulting in a decrease in demand for smartwatches. Also, an Indian brand, Fire-Boltt, has made significant strides in the global smartwatch market, emerging as the second-largest watch seller worldwide. The company achieved a remarkable 57% growth compared to the previous quarter. Source: Counterpoint Research's Global Smartwatch Model Tracker
  8. Samsung Galaxy S23 FE may launch sooner than you think by Rahul Naskar Image showing the Galaxy S23 lineup We are well into 2023 and haven't seen the Galaxy S22 FE yet. And, in all likelihood, we never will. However, that doesn't mean Samsung is turning its back on the Fan Edition phones, at least for now. Several rumors have already suggested that Samsung is planning to release Galaxy S23 FE this year. According to the latest rumor, Samsung has plans to release the S23 FE before the official launch of its next-generation foldable phones -- Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5. A couple of months ago, we saw reports claiming that Galaxy S23 FE would debut sometime in September. But fresh rumors are claiming that the official launch date of S23 FE has now been brought forward. On his Twitter handle, leaker Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) has claimed that Samsung is eyeing a July-August timeframe to release the Galaxy S23 FE. In certain regions, it will be available for purchase well before the launch of new Galaxy foldable phones. Fan Edition phones never get released with as much fanfare as the more premium Galaxy S or foldable phones. Usually, the company announces them in a blog post. It makes sense because, in FE-branded devices, you hardly get anything new. Essentially, it's a toned-down variant of the Galaxy S base model. History might repeat itself, and we might see the S23 FE announcement in a blog post, while foldable phones go official at the Unpacked event this year in the summertime. Samsung has not officially announced when it will host the Unpacked summer event. But in recent years, the event has been held in August. Last year, it was held on August 10, and a year before that, it was on August 11. Due to the sluggish sales of the S series, there are predictions that Samsung Electronics will release the 'Galaxy S23 FE' in certain regions before the launch of the new foldable phone. In this case, the Galaxy S23 FE is expected to be released around July or August. https://t.co/pxlXiNybq5 — Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) May 24, 2023 However, we have previously heard that Samsung may hold the Unpacked event in July this year, breaking with its tradition. Whatever the case may be, the S23 FE will reportedly go official before the Unpacked event. Update: According to a report from SamMobile, the Galaxy S23 will not launch anytime soon, contrary to what the leaker claimed. The news outlet further claims that the company might push the launch date to Q1 of 2024 or cancel it altogether. Only time will tell who's right and who's wrong.

  10. Samsung Display shows off a new rollable mobile screen that expands to over 10 inches by John Callaham The dream of a rollable display for mobile devices continues to take shape in the real world. Today, Samsung Display announced a new screen technology called Rollable Flex, which it says could be used for tablets or laptops. Samsung Display's press release says that a Rollable Flex screen can expand from just 49 mm (1.9 inches) in length to 254.4 mm (10.10 inches). It stated: While conventional foldable or slidable form factors offer up to three times the scalability, Rollable Flex overcomes such limitations by enabling the display to be rolled and unrolled on an O-shaped axis like a scroll. “The biggest feature is that we were able to turn a difficult-to-carry large-sized display into a portable form factor by making it rollable,” Samsung Display explained. The company is showing off a demo of Rollable Flex this week at the annual SID Display Week in Los Angeles. The press release didn't state how far along this new display technology was in development, nor when it might be made available for consumer tablets and notebooks. Rollable displays have become something of a trend at trade shows this year. Motorola showed off a prototype of a phone with a rollable screen at the Mobile World Congress trade show in February. Its parent company Lenovo also showed off a notebook with a rollable display at the same trade show. In addition to Rollable Flex, Samsung showed a new design for a foldable smartphone, called Flex In & Out. It has a display that can be folded either inward or outward. It stated: The ‘in-folding’ form factor, which can only be folded inward, requires a separate external panel to view information while folded, but the Flex In & Out is able to overcome that, opening up the possibility of lighter and thinner foldable phones. Again, there's no word on when this screen will be included in a real smartphone. Samsung also will show off a combo foldable-slidable phone display, the Flex Hybrid, along with a more standard sliding display, the Slidable Flex Solo, which can expand from 13 inches to 17 inches.
  11. Samsung highlights core features of Knox Matrix by Rahul Naskar Samsung's Knox security system has turned 10 today, and to celebrate this important milestone, the South Korean tech giant has highlighted how it aims for a safer future for its customers with Knox Matrix, a holistic security platform to protect connected devices better. As announced by Samsung last year, Knox Matrix is based on the idea that prevention is better than cure. It prevents others from getting impacted when one device is compromised within the same ecosystem, thus turning a smart home into a "smart shield." Samsung Matrix will allow compatible devices to check each other for breaches to ensure safety, which Samsung says is a "revolutionary" idea. And all of this will be managed within a private blockchain. In its official blog post, Samsung has highlighted three critical features of Knox Matrix. The first is what the company calls a "trust chain" for devices monitoring each other to detect threats. The other one is "Credential Sync," which will ensure safety when data is moved between devices. Lastly, various operating systems and platforms, such as Android, Tizen, and Windows, can join Knox Matrix to keep devices safe. Samsung Galaxy products will be the first to be equipped with Knox Matrix. The company will start releasing compatible tablets and smartphones starting in 2024, and the technology will eventually be explained to cover its home appliance devices and partner devices. Initially, Knox Matrix will be available with three core features Samsung highlighted, with more features to be introduced at a later stage. Knox Matrix differs from the existing Knox security technology. The latter ensures that your confidential and sensitive data stays safe and secure in your Galaxy smartphone. The most significant difference is that Knox is meant to protect a single device, while Knox Matrix aims to provide an additional security measure to protect an array of devices from infecting one another. If you have a Samsung Galaxy phone, you can check if yours has Knox security by going to Settings > About phone > Software information. If you do not see the Knox version, your does not have it. Samsung also has a list of devices protected by Knox.

  13. Report says Samsung has decided not to replace Google with Microsoft's Bing in its phones by John Callaham In April, The New York Times reported that Samsung was considering replacing Google Search as the default search engine for its Galaxy smartphones for Microsoft's Bing. Now it appears that the Korean giant has pressed the "pause" button on such a move. The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources, claims that Samsung has now suspended an internal review that was considering switching from Google to Bing for its smartphones. When the original NYT story hit, it stated that Samsung was impressed with Microsoft's efforts into adding generative AI into its search program via Bing Chat. As a result of that report, Google's stock price went down by 2.5 percent on that day. However, it was pointed out after that report was published that Google has what it calls the Mobile Application Distribution Agreement (MADA). It basically stated that any smartphone company that wanted the Google Play Store installed must also set Google Search as the default search engine on their phones. Having said that, since Samsung is the largest worldwide Android-based smartphone company by a pretty fair margin, it's more than possible that it has a special agreement with Google that is not available for other Android smartphone companies. For example, Samsung has its own Galaxy Store for downloading apps on its smartphones which is something other Android phones with the Google Play Store don't have. In any case, it would appear that Samsung is sticking to what it knows and will keep Google Search as the default search engine for its smartphones. Microsoft and its Bing search engine will have to find their way into the mobile space in other ways. It's already doing so by adding Bing Chat services to its Bing mobile app, and it's also adding AI chat to other mobile app services like its SwiftKey keyboard, its Edge browser, and its Skype messaging service. There's are still rumors that Bing could replace Google Search as the default in the Firefox browser, but so far there's been no official indication that might happen.
  14. Amazon Deal: Save big on Samsung monitors starting as low as $128 right now by John Callaham Earlier this week, we posted about a number of Samsung PC monitors that were at their lowest prices during the Samsung Days sales event. However, most of them, such as the huge 55-inch Samsung Odyssey Ark at $1,999, were still on the pricey side even after those big discounts. If you are looking for deals on monitors that are all under $500, Samsung has you covered there as well. Right now you can get the 27-inch Samsung T35F Series PC monitor for just $128 on Amazon. That's a $91.99 discount from its normal $219.99 MSRP. The 1080p monitor is perfect for a second display for work with a 75Hz refresh rate and even AMD FreeSync support for gaming. If you are looking for a larger work monitor that's also more immersive, check out the curved 32-inch Samsung S39C Series display. It's currently discounted on Amazon down to $229.99. 15. Samsung begins mass-producing its 'most advanced' 12nm DDR5 memory chips by Taras Buria Samsung Electronics has started mass production of the "industry's most advanced" DDR5 DRAM memory chips based on the 12nm technology it announced in late 2022. The main highlight of the new chips is notable improvements in power consumption and wafer productivity. Samsung says its new 12nm-class DRAM consumes 23% less energy than the previous generation. That gives global IT companies "the ideal solution" to reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint in their servers and data centers. Such efficiency improvement was made possible thanks to a new material with a high dielectric constant that helps increase cell capacitance, explains Samsung: Using differentiated process technology, Samsung’s industry-leading 12nm-class DDR5 DRAM delivers outstanding performance and power efficiency. Our latest DRAM reflects our continued commitment to leading the DRAM market, not only with high-performance and high-capacity products that meet computing market demand for large-scale processing but also by commercializing next-generation solutions that support greater productivity. Samsung's newest DDR5 DRAM 16Gb memory chips operate at a maximum speed of 7.2Gbps, which roughly translates to processing two 30GB UHD movies in one second. Last December, the manufacturer finished the compatibility evaluation with AMD. Now, it works with other tech companies to support the ever-growing list of next-generation computing applications and services, like AI, that require the fastest and most efficient memory chips.

  18. Samsung builds new Kiosk for businesses that runs Windows by Paul Hill Samsung has unveiled the KMC-W, a new version of the Samsung Kiosk that runs Windows. The South Korean company said that the 24-inch display device will bring expanded software compatibility to self-service display technology used in the food and beverage, retail, travel, and healthcare sectors. The KMC-W is running the Windows 10 IoT Enterprise operating system. Samsung says it has full compatibility with major ordering, point-of-sale, and property management system software. Customers will be able to choose various CPU options including the Intel Celeron 6305E, Core i3, or Core i5 processors. It will also come with 8 GB DRAM memory and 256 GB SSD for adequate storage space and good performance. “The retail landscape is changing based on consumer behaviors and rising demand for contactless and non-cash payment methods,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “As this trend accelerates not just in retail but also in the food and beverage, healthcare, travel and other sectors, the Samsung Kiosk is the future-ready solution industries need to respond to global demand.” With the KMC-W running Windows, businesses should now have access to a greater library of software to facilitate bill payments, drive-thru, self-ordering, smart cafes, and unmanned fitting rooms. The company also said that the display also includes UL-certified antimicrobial coating and shatterproof film. These things should make it more resilient and hygienic to use. Businesses can learn more about the Kiosk on Samsung’s website.

The Wall TV is actually a series of MicroLED panels that are connected together to form a seamless display. Here's some info on the screen's picture quality A deep black background blankets the screen with accurate uniformity, creating a seamless canvas for purer black levels. The enhanced depth delivers unparalleled contrast and immaculate detail. Colors leap to life with spectacular vibrancy to recreate scenes as if you were there in real life. Narrower wavelengths produce RGB colors two times purer and more accurate than conventional LEDs. Samsung claims that it will take just two hours for two people to mount the TV's brackets on a wall (no there's no stand for this TV), then put in background plates, and then mount and connect the actual display panels. The TV's control box is actually built into the display to cut down on the number of visible cords. You can also save money for a limited time on the smaller 110-inch 2K model of The Wall as well. Samsung sells a 4K 146-inch version but it currently doesn't have a discount. 20. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5 will launch on July 26 by Omer Dursun Samsung is rumored to launch its next-gen foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip5 and the Z Fold5, earlier than expected. Reports (via Chosun) suggest that the devices will be unveiled at a Galaxy Unpacked event on July 26, 2023. This shift in strategy is attributed to sluggish semiconductor chip sales, which have affected Samsung's profits. By launching the new foldable phones ahead of schedule, Samsung aims to bolster its Q3 2023 revenue. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is expected to feature a distinct teardrop hinge design, enabling the screen to fold more evenly with fewer wrinkles. While reports differ on the exact phone dimensions, the inner screen is expected to measure 7.6 inches, with the outer screen at 6.2 inches. The device is also rumored to have IP68 water and dust resistance certification. Camera specifications have generated considerable interest, with conflicting reports suggesting either a 108 MP primary sensor, a 64 MP 2x telephoto lens, and a 12 MP wide-angle lens, or a 50 MP main lens, a 12 MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 10 MP telephoto camera. On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature an upgraded hinge mechanism designed to minimize creases in the middle of the screen. This new teardrop hinge will allow both sides of the folding screen to close tightly without leaving a gap. The external display is also likely larger, potentially measuring 3.8 inches, providing more space for additional features and controls. A Snapdragon chipset will power the device, probably the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and offer storage options ranging from 128GB to 512 GB. The phone's photographic capabilities are expected to include a dual-lens rear camera system with a 12 MP primary camera and a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle lens. Source: Chosun (Korean)

  23. Samsung and Tesla are reportedly in talks over development of high-end automotive tech by Aditya Tiwari Samsung said on Sunday that a private meeting was held between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong. This hints towards a potential partnership that could materialize between the two companies to develop high-end technologies, according to a report by Yonhap news agency. The meeting happened earlier this week on Wednesday at Samsung's semiconductor research center in Silicon Valley. While the two executives have met at several events, this was the first time the two leaders talked in a private setup. The publication reports, citing sources, that Samsung and Tesla have been exploring partnerships related to the development of IT-related technologies, including chips for autonomous cars. Industry watchers said that the latest meeting could open doors for both companies to work together in the automotive chip sector. Speaking of which, the market for automotive chips is expected to reach $700 billion by 2028. The report says that Lee, who was on a 22-day trip to the U.S., also met other tech executives, including Microsoft's Satya Nadella and Google's Sundar Pichai. Samsung has been working on automotive hardware for quite some time. Last year, the company introduced a new lineup of memory chips for cars designed to cater to modern features such as ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems) and IVI (In-Vehicle-Infotainment). Also, Samsung announced earlier this year that it will manufacture 5nm chips for the US-based fabless semiconductor design company Ambarella, whose new SoC CV3-AD685 was designed to be used as an AI controller for autonomous cars.
